Of charmingly crude style
Lot 4522
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Silvered bronze, 19 mm, 2.99 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Treveri, irregular mint, after 321. CONSTANTINVS P F EX AVG Laureate and cuirassed bust of Constantine I to right. Rev. BEATA TRANQVILLITAS / PT[R] Globe set on altar inscribed VO/TIS / XX. Cf. RIC 317 (for possible prototype). A lovely imitation of charmingly crude style. Minor weakness and with a flan fault on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

Aside from the crude style, several features indicate that this is an unofficial 'barbarous' imitation. The odd obverse legend is unknown from any official coin, and in the official Treveri emissions the obverse legend is always 'CONSTAN-TINVS AVG'. Moreover, the reverse legend is unbroken and the three stars are absent, features never seen in regular Tcoinage. In addition, the laureate and cuirassed bust B5 was never used for Constantine in the 'BEATA' emissions of Treveri.
